EU Regulations Affecting Indian Exporters
Two sweeping EU laws that every Indian exporter needs to understand
โ ๏ธ If you export to Europe, this is urgent reading.
The EU has introduced two major regulations that are already in effect or imminent. Indian exporters of steel, aluminum, timber, rubber, and more face significant financial exposure. The time to prepare is now, not after the deadlines.
๐ญ CBAM โ Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism
EU's carbon import tax ยท In full effect: January 2026
What it is: A carbon tax on imports entering the EU. If you export steel, cement, aluminum, or fertilizers to Europe, you'll need to report the carbon footprint of your product โ and pay a fee based on it.
Products Covered
Iron & Steel, Cement, Aluminum, Fertilizers, Electricity, Hydrogen
India's Exposure
~$5โ6 billion of Indian exports at risk. Steel (biggest), Aluminum, Fertilizers.
Key number: Without CBAM preparation, a steel exporter could face a 20โ30% cost increase on EU shipments. A 10,000 tonne/year steel exporter could owe โฌ2โ3 lakh+ in CBAM fees per year.

GPS-verified deforestation-free sourcing ยท Large companies: Dec 2026
What it is: A law requiring proof that products sold in the EU did not contribute to deforestation. Exporters must provide GPS coordinates of source plots and legal compliance documentation.
Products Covered
Timber, Rubber, Coffee, Cocoa, Palm Oil, Soy, Cattle and derived products
India's Advantage
India classified as "Low Risk" โ easier compliance, lower inspection rates (1% vs 9%)
Key requirement: GPS coordinates of ALL plots where your commodity was produced. This takes time to set up โ start now.

CBAM allows a deduction for carbon prices already paid domestically. If your company participates in India's CCTS, that amount is deducted from your CBAM liability.
Without CCTS: Pay full EU price (โฌ90/tonne) on all embedded emissions
With CCTS (โน500 = ~โฌ5 paid): Pay only โฌ85/tonne โ partial relief
Lesson: Participating in India's carbon market builds a double benefit โ domestic compliance + CBAM reduction.
